Section 7

Beamish to Washington Old Hall

coaltruck logo.png

A walk through mature woodland leads to the Bowes Incline and many reminders of past railway systems.  The landscape in this area has been shaped by extensive coal mining activity. A short urban section brings you to Washington Village.  Finish at the ancestral home of the first American President. There is an optional detour to the Angel of the North - 1.5 miles, allow 45 minutes. When passing through farmland, please would walkers ensure that all gates are closed after passing through, dogs are kept under strict control and no litter is left.

Temporary footpath closure until April 2024
Follow Direction 9 as written.
Just beyond a bridge with white panels, turn right down a steep path.  Go straight ahead, passing Usworth House Farm.  On reaching a road, turn left to cross the motorway etc as in Direction 10.
